grocery stores were packed with people getting supplies. now just a matter of waiting and hoping for the best. this morning a ferocious and deadly hurricane beryl heading straight for jamaica bringing potentially life threatening flash floods and storm surge up to nine feet. already decimating several caribbean islands since making its landfall monday. >> there goes another roof. >> reporter: new images capturing beryl's wrath as it roared ashore in grenada as a category 4 hurricane. stunning drone video showing the devastation. neighborhoods flattened. nearly every home and business torn apart. authorities saying at least six people killed. satellite images capturing the before and disaster of the historic storm. at one point intensified to a category 5. and surges barrelling through parts of st. lucis sending residents running.

robin? >> robin: faith, thank you. we're thinking of everybody in the path. let's bring in ginger with the track and timing and its threat to the mainland. >> ginger: yes, good morning everyone. beryl is less than 200 miles from jamaica. they will, moving at 20 miles an hour west/northwest. going straight toward them. they will see the dirty side of the storm if not the eye wall by this afternoon. cayman islands, cancun down to belize has to look out for friday. then it goes back into the bay. here's what we're saying. that high pressure system that's been keeping it south and keeping us safe is receding. it is moving east. that is allowing for more and more action towards south texas. that would be by sunday into monday. so we're watching that. even if it stays in mexico for another landfall, we would see coastal flooding in parts of southeast texas and heavy rain. i also want to mention 13,000 people have been forced to evacuate in northern california

thanks to the thompson fire, now more than 3,000 achers. as they set up for one of the longest heat domes and heat ridges that we've seen in about 18 years. so we're seeing excessive heat warnings from washington state down into arizona, guys. this is a big one and it's gonna last a long time. we've seen hotter but not in 18 years. >> george: latest on president biden's bid to keep his candidacy alive after last week's debate. biden team pushing forward as some democrats call on the president to step aside. rachel scott is tracking the frays washington. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning to you. in the last 24 hours alone, one democrat has called on the president to step aside. two others are openly saying that he cannot win the election this november. even some of biden's closest allies say questions about his age and mental fitness are legitimate. this morning as democrats question whether president biden should move for war with his campaign, the president is trying to explain what exactly happened on that debate stage. at a fund-raiser in virginia,

the president saying he wasn't very smart for traveling internationally ahead of the debate telling donors he, quote, almost fell asleep. some in the room laughing. the president adding, it's not an excuse, but an explanation. the president traveled to europe twice in jeune but he returned back to the united states 12 days before the debate. sources they during his debate prep at camp david, advisers blocked out time forest. for days the white house blamed a cold, not the president's travel schedule, insisting it was just one bad night. but some democrats aren't buying it. >> really not just a bad night. it is a situation that has to be addressed. >> reporter: now the first democratic member of congress, lloyd dogin of texas saying the president should step aside. >> i salute president biden. i just feel that it's time for him to step aside if we are to be able to protect what he allowed us to get in 2020 which was a victory for democracy. but he delivered us from trump then.

he could be delivering us to trump this year. >> reporter: sources tell abc news, a second lawmaker, senator joe manchin of west virginia, was planning to urge biden to withdraw but senior democrats talked him out of it. even some of biden's closest allies like nancy pelosi, calling the questions about his mental fitness, legitimate. >> i think it's a legitimate question to say, is this an episode or is this a condition? >> reporter: so we asked the white house. you said it is a legitimate question to ask, if this is san episode or if this is a condition. which one is it? >> well, what i can tell you he had a cold and a bad night. i would not see this as an episode. i would see this as what it was and what we believe it to be which is it was a bad night. >> reporter: some democrats casting doubt that biden can win in november.

>> truth i think is that biden's going to lose to trump. i know that's difficult, but i think the damage has been done by that debate. >> reporter: another ally, congressman jim clyburn said biden should stay in the race, but if he drops out, democrats should rally around vice president harris. >> i will support her if he were to step aside. >> reporter: a new cnn poll shows vice president kamala harris outperformed president biden in a head to head matchup with donald trump. the white house said the president and vice president will have lunch together today. the white house press secretary could not answer questions about whether the two had even spoken after the debate. also today, the president is expected to meet with democratic governors. it comes as some have raised concerns about the president's debate performance and also the path forward, robin. >> robin: appreciate your reporting there. thank you very much. we know you will be talking to the president later this week. >> george: the white house reached out. i'll head to wisconsin probably friday. still working out the details. this will be the first broadcast

interview since the debate. so many questions for the president you see coming in from his allies. we're going to talk to him on friday in wisconsin. then we'll play clips across all abc platforms friday. extended interview sunday on "this week." >> robin: many are anxious to hear what he has to say. >> george: no question about that. now the new development in donald trump's hush money case. the judge delayed sentencing as he considers a request to void the conviction after the supreme court's ruling on presidential immunity. >> reporter: trump was supposed to be sentenced next week after he was convicted here in new york of falsifying business records. the judge pushed that until september 18th. so he can consider whether the supreme court's ruling on presidential immunity has any bearing on the case. the supreme court granted trump immunity from prosecution for official acts covering up hush money to adult film actress stormy daniels hardly sounds like an official act. but trump's lawyers said it should be thrown out meaning some evidence should never have

been put before the jury. they said that includes the testimony of former white house communications director hope hicks and several of trump's tweets. after the court limited the kinds of evidence that can be used at a trial of a president. prosecutors said, although we believe defendants arguments to be without merit, we do not oppose this request to delay sentencing. george, this is all new. the judge is going to be the first to grapple with this sweeping supreme court opinion. he said he would decide sometime in early september. george? >> george: thank you very much. let's go to gio. >> gio: now the massive travel rush expected this holiday. aaa is expecting nearly 6 million people to fly this week as we learn more about that terrifying turbulence incident and we're hearing from one of the passengers on board. trevor ault has the story now. good morning, trevor. a scary situation for that mom. >> reporter: absolutely, gio. it's happening while we're in the middle of this busy stretch of travel. we've got those new details about this extreme turbulence overseas. the passenger is a surgeon who

says not only did she help assess some of the many injuries of passengers on board, she said her 2-year-old was tossed up in the air up above the overhead compartments. this morning an investigation under way into that stunning severe turbulence incident that injured dozens of passengers overseas. at least ten passengers were transported to the hospital, many tossed about the cabin. >> someone said it was like being inside a washing machine. >> reporter: this surgeon was on board saying the plane felt like it was free falling for six or seven seconds. turbulence so strong it threw her 2-year-old up in the luggage compartment. >> we were trying to find him on the floor. i started screaming his name. until someone told me, are you looking for a baby? i said, yes. he said, well, it's up there and he pointed up. it was an image i will never forget.

he was crying. he was very scared. we were all very scared as well. but the moment i took him in my arms he calmed down. >> reporter: she said multiple people were thrown above the luggage. this man showing a man being pulled down, though it's not clear how he ended up there. she said her son is, thankfully, okay, her 4-year-old daughter is bruised and cut but all right. blood seen in the after math. the flight making an emergency landing in brazil. >> it seems that we're seeing more of these incidents where people are injured in turbulence. but two things to remember. one is the airplane is very, very strong. the second is, nobody that's wearing a seat belt gets hurt. it's only the people who are not belted in that get hurt. >> reporter: here at newark on top of all the crowds, they're also having staffing issue with their air traffic control that's leading to delays. just yesterday they had 361 delays just here. looking ahead through the rest of the holiday stretch, tomorrow, the 4th of july will

>> the water quality hasn't been good for awhile. >> reporter: from new york to massachusetts, even california, among states over the past week urging people to stay out of the water. in massachusetts, more than 40 beaches now closed. >> i'll probably google if this beach has high bacteria before we go anywhere else. >> reporter: in california, at least three areas along san diego bay closed off to swimmers. many beaches on the east coast it's a combination of heavy storms and runoff. >> we look for two particular types of bacteria that we think are marker bacteria. they tell us if there are other bacteria that are present. those are e-coli. they are common bacteria that we see in runoff and waste water. >> reporter: if that harmful bacteria gets into an open wound, it could cause an infection. >> anyone's at risk of getting sick if you swallow water, touch the water and don't wash your hands before you eat or drink the food. or if you have an open cut or wound.

bohemian police say they are committed to solving what happened to her. taylor's mother speaking to abc news overnight saying this is her worst nightmare. this morning a desperate mother's plea for help from the u.s. government nearly two weeks after her daughter mysteriously vanished from a yoga retreat in the bahamas. >> nobody was acting like this was their child that's missing. >> reporter: taylor casey's loved ones, who just returned from the island, calling on the fbi and u.s. state department to intervene, saying they are not satisfied with answers from local authorities and ashram leaders so far. >> they didn't have any leads or any conclusions about what might have happened. there were some real gaps in the information. if americans are not safe abroad and our government is not doing anything about it, that's a problem. >> it is vitally important to work these cases the moment you know about a person being missing. >> reporter: taylor's mother describing her visit as deeply unsettling and seemed like the

leadership were struggling to keep a cohesive narrative regarding taylor's disappearance. >> the one who informed me that my child was missing, i thought she would have really came in to meet me, to see me. she didn't. she was on the premises teaching a class. a class? is a class more important than my child? >> reporter: the 41-year-old was last seen in nassau june 20th at a yoga retreat which can be seen in these videos online. the ashram saying when taylor didn't show up for yoga class, they alerted authorities immediately and have been trying to assist the family ever since. telling abc news, we met with them, along with the police and the representatives of the u.s. embassy on two occasions. adding, at the end of the afternoon, taylor's mother and friends thanked us profusely for our help. bohemian police saying they're using all resources at their disposal, telling abc news it is a matter of priority.

largely been resolved, yes. key part of that is the president submitted, congress passed change in our compensation plan for tsa which basically put us on the same pay scale as the rest of the federal government. that reduced our attrition by 50%. we have a lot more people applying for jobs in tsa. so our staffing is the healthiest it's been since i have been administrator. >> george: how about highened security threats over the holiday weekend? >> no specific threats, george, to aviation. but we are always vigilant. we ask passengers to be vigilant. we know we continue to work very closely with our law enforcement partners, other agencies across the board. we're ready for threats. we also have, as you know, invest significantly in technology in our check points which means we're more effective in our security. overall just ask everybody to be vigilant. we are always very vigilant. >> george: you say people have to be vigilant. how else should travellers prepare this weekend? >> best thing for travellers, because it's going to be so busy, taking more time.

at the top of your show you mentioned rush hours on highways. there are also rush hours in airports. so if you're going to travel on a flight say between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., take a little more time because that's very, very busy at the airport. same 4 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the afternoons. the other thing, for your carry-on bag, if you use it for other purposes. like, if you use it to go to the beach, the firing range, for example. just empty that out completely before you fill it up again for the travel you plan to take now. we find way too many firearms in our check points. if passengers would just empty those carry-on bags and refill them, it might prevent inadvertent inclusions of firearms or large items that would be prohibited at our check points, which will slow a passenger down and slow all the passengers in that same lane with them. >> george: a lot of good advice. thank you very much for your time.

robin? >> robin: we always say be sure to pack a lot of patience. now the fda approving a new drug to treat early alzheimer's symptoms. it is just the second approved drug currently available that could help slow the progression of the debilitaing disease. elizabeth schulze joins us with more. good morning to you, elizabeth. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. this is a hopeful milestone for many of the 7 million americans living with alzheimer's. the fda has now approved eli lilly's new alzheimer's drug called kinsunla. this makes it the second drug available to u.s. patients to help improve symptoms for people in early stages of the disease. lilly said it helps slow memory decline and reduce progression of the alzheimer's in late stage trials. a year long treatment will cost $32,000 before discounts but it is expected to be covered by medicare. this drug is administered once a month through iv infusions. that is less frequent than the other drug on the market which is given every two weeks. importantly neither treatments

>> robin: we are back with our gma cover story. a new study suggests acupuncture could have tremendous benefits for those suffering with a certain kind of lower back pain. dr. sutton is going to break it down for us. good morning. >> this is data that helps patients that come in with one of the most common problems in the emergency room, as you said. lower back pain. what we're specifically talking about is spinal stenosis. in this study, they found that acupuncture, if used consistently, over six weeks, was associated with more than a 40% improvement in pain for patients. now that's incredible because
