It was good to feel the sand back between the toes on this holiday back in the UAE last year. I realise there is some LinkedIn chatter about the site turning more into Facebook than its networking origins intended, but I am easing my way back in, and there will be more purpose when September comes round, I promise. A friend, helpfully role-playing a potential future employer recently challenged me, "So what sets you apart from all these other applicants?" It often translates nowadays into the ‘what’s your superpower?’ question.Over the course of my career, I've worked in nearly every team and unit within the Compliance function imaginable: - from sat in the middle of businesses, helping, challenging and guiding; to- setting up new desks, entities and even country presences, end-to-end with regulatory and licence applications and embedded enterprise risk frameworks; to- lamp-in-the-face inspections and investigations from the authorities; to- writing policies and designing control frameworks from scratch and then driving implementation locally/globally; to- testing, assuring and monitoring that all that is working effectively; to- Playing a decisive and purposeful role heading/around Management and Risk committee tables of all shapes and sizes; to- leading and managing teams of diverse sizes, backgrounds and experiences, as a hands-on, empathetic, player-coach. I’ve done that across most products and client segments in financial services, and in most locations you can think of, given the geographical exposure Standard Chartered and Bear Stearns gave me over the last two decades.BUT, are those superpowers? No. Lots of you will have done/are doing lots of that. My REAL superpowers… the things almost no-one can do better than me on the planet: Weaning that one on the left off Pokemon cards, and onto football stickers, to EVERYONE’S relief; andAs a baby, getting that one on the right, a terrible sleeper, to nod off each night AND transition him from arms to cot seamlessly However, all that important stuff earlier might also be exactly what you're looking for to assist and grow your businesses and teams. If so, give me a follow, and drop me a message. Let’s chat. Now if I can just get that one on the left riding a bike before summer holidays, I will be ready for The Avengers!

Misinformation & Disinformation – big risks for corporatesRecently I heard six of Australia’s top economists’ predict the risks for our local and global economies. Two ideas have stuck.1.Don Stammer’s “the magic of compound interest rates”. Especially magical with the current predictions of “higher for longer interest rates”.2.Nicki Hutley, view from the World Economic Forum, talked about how the participants voted that for the next two years, the number one global risk by severity is “misinformation and disinformation”. Scary stuff given there are elections on every continent scheduled over the next couple of years. I’ve been thinking about both these ideas. For Don’s point it was a reminder talk with my kids, all of whom need every advantage to be able to one day buy their own homes. On mis & disinformation, we’ve all felt the increasing spread of fake news and know the motivation behind it is usually financial, political, malicious, or simply to build a following. Mostly we are left to ourselves to decipher each post, but the impact of viral algos by big tech, weaponises narratives. This is a big risk to business. I’ve witnessed how the narratives of critics, based on false facts, can cause huge confusion, impacting individuals, teams, and the bottom line. My moving swiftly to set the record straight, organisations can try to balance out the landscape. And even better, by quickly empowering employees to help can have a big impact. But this is hard to do with the disorganised state of employee comms at most organisation. Our own Traffyk.ai data shows just how much a random walk and productivity-suck the current approach to employee comms delivers. The Noise in most workplaces is deafening and achieving Cut-Through to the right audience, at the right time on the right channel is usually a fluke. There’s no silver bullet to sort this out but understanding and mitigating the risks go a long way. First up is to gain a deep understanding of an organisations work communications ecosystem, which is the lifeblood of any team. By seeing the flow of information, leaders can start to address issues and adapt their approach to communication.Bottom line, by combining the power of AI, critical thinking, and a commitment to truth and transparency, we can build resilience against the threat of miscommunication and disinformation. With viral misinformation becoming the norm, strategic employee communication is an important risk management tool.#misinformation #disinformation #employeecommunications #workcommunications #riskmanagement

📢 Happy Monday! Most of us are taking some much-needed time away this month. Thinking ahead to the fall, I wanted to share some trends that we are seeing going into the post-vacation season✴️ Hiring will continue to thaw at all levels, primarily driven by an improved economic outlook, increased regulatory pressures, and corporate performance✴️ Return-to-Office (RTO) remains the labor issue of our time as employers and employees struggle to find balance✴️ GRC teams are becoming more and more focused on AI as an enabler, threat, and beacon of scrutiny for regulators✴️ GRC mandates expanding beyond highly regulated industries into luxury goods, tech, food/beverage, and higher education, to name a fewThere is never a dull moment in our sectors...what else are you seeing in the marketplace? Please share in the comment section below.#grc #falltrends #compliance

Is your Risk Attitude fit for Purpose?***We invited #purpose, #risk and #attitude for a coffee and this was the initial result of our conversations:*No inner calling, no reason to change, no risk.No risk, no challenge, no flow.No flow, no engagement, no learning. No engagement, no resilience. No learning, no anti fragility.*These are some basic puzzle pieces. There is more, absolutely, but let’s start from the basic idea that if we are aiming at a #valuesdriven or #purposedriven approach to (work) life, we need to learn to dare and get out of our comfort zones (no major news to most of us).*A key consideration for success along the way >>> increased understanding about our own risk profile, our attitude to risk and perceived uncertainty of our targets...~ how much risk does it take to grow?~ how much are we willing to take?~ … can we take?~ are we scared or excited when daring?… will enable a more healthy and realistic approach to embedding purpose and related goals on our pathway.*Like this, literally anyone can do it, at their own pace, without feeling chronically overwhelmed, or driven by external expectations, and in particular when linked to value codes. *Ultimately, the more we value something, the more we are willing to risk, which emphasises the dynamic nature of individual and collective risk profiles. *Would you agree?*Connect to learn more about our Values & Risk Series. You are also invited to join the conversation and add your thoughts on this matter - we would be thrilled to know 🤗*Stay tuned for some news soon!*For the truly curious in the meanwhile: https://lnkd.in/eyTPuCi9 *Best wishes ✨___What we do >>> https://lnkd.in/eM5vHuEKWho we are and why we do it >>> https://lnkd.in/e49axWFmA few clients, cases & reviews so far >>> https://lnkd.in/e_bg2nMj*PS: Our pool of passionate (freelance) professionals and initiators is growing ((senior) creatives, film makers, educational scientists, etc.). Are you a victim of information overload?"One third of managers are victims of "Information Fatigue Syndrome." 49 percent said they are unable to handle the vast amounts of information received. 33 percent of managers were suffering ill health as a direct result of information overload. 62 percent admitted their business and social relationships suffer. 66 percent reported tension with colleagues and diminished job satisfaction. 43 percent think that important decisions are delayed and their abilities to make decisions are affected as a result of having too much information." - Jeff DavidsonDo you have it? In a social media driven era, most of us are trapped or in the midst of this information overload. From the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep, looking at our smartphones for just about anything is creating a dangerous habit that reduces the quality of decision making, thinking, and even interactions. This also builds unnecessary fears, worries, stress and reduces trust overall. There used to be a time, when one is in the public space that people smiled at each other, had quick to deep conversations and were social. Today, almost everyone has a gadget and we are glued to it, with heads bowed, consuming information or communicating information rapidly. Is that even a problem? Is this a current trend?"Sometimes a pessimist is only an optimist with extra information." - Idries ShahThe answer is found right in the beginning of Genesis in the Holy Bible, when Adam and Eve were tempted by the devil to eat of the tree of knowledge. The immediate result was information overload. For the first time, they doubted, got confused, feared, felt shameful, gave excuses, blamed others, lost trust and got lost. Information overload is dangerous and we like Adam and Eve are not even aware of what's happening to us. We are building our own graves. So, is there a way out? To answer that, we must first ask ourselves, "do we want a way out?"Second, use filtering and withdrawal approaches:Filtering:"In the Information Age, the first step to sanity is FILTERING. Filter the information: extract for knowledge. Filter first for substance. Filter second for significance. These filters protect against advertising. Filter third for reliability. This filter protects against politicians. Filter fourth for completeness. This filter protects against the media." - Marc StieglerWithdrawal uses 2 approaches - Excluding - reduce the amount of incoming information.Including - select only relevant and important news for consumptionWant to lead better in this digital age? Then we must learn to manage and overcome information overload.💡I provide Visual frameworks & tools with stories for leaders to See, Serve & Share in this digital era. 🔔 Subscribe today.#ashleyvinil #storytelling #leadership #visualleadership #visdemy
