How accurate is storm radar? ›

Weather surveillance radars such as the WSR-88D can detect most precipitation within approximately 80 nautical miles (nm) of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 140 nm. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.

The radar is located to the southeast, or to the bottom right of the computer screen. Note the bright red, or strong outbound velocities right next to the bright green, or inbound velocities. This indicates a strongly rotating column of air.

In the 1990s, weather-radar technology developed enough to let us see the winds within a thunderstorm. By using the Doppler effect to measure how fast and in which direction rain, hail, and snow are moving, it can accurately tell us the wind speed and direction of a storm.

Subrefraction causes the radar to overshoot objects that would normally be detected. Distant thunderstorms might not be detected with subrefraction as well as under reporting the intensity as the beam hits only the top portion of the thunderstorm cloud.

LiDAR has higher resolution and can provide more detailed and accurate measurements than radar.

Red indicates the winds moving away from the radar whereas green displays the winds moving toward the radar. Brighter shades identify faster winds whereas darker shades show slower winds. Such maps typically indicate a tornado by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green.

On a weather radar map, a tornado is usually indicated by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green. However, modern radar systems can also indicate debris balls, a sign of a tornado on the ground.

Whites or blues mean snowfall and pink indicates freezing rain, sleet, or a wintry mix. This can differ from model to model or depending on what view of the radar you are looking at; but as a rule of thumb, this is what each of the colors means when we show you the Futurecast model or radar.

The complexity of weather forecasting and the large amounts of data that must be collected and processed means there will always be some errors along the way. Quality and Quantity of Data: The quality of the weather instruments used affects the accuracy of the data.

Rain Intensity and Droplet Size: Light rainfall or drizzle consists of tiny water droplets. These droplets might be too small for the radar to detect effectively. Since low-level moisture can lead to the formation of such fine droplets, the rain might be falling right under our noses but stay invisible to the radar.

The radar isn't lying, rather, the the rain or snow is not hitting the ground. If you have a dry air mass in place in the low levels, sometimes rain cannot completely penetrate that dry layer before it evaporates.

According to experts, as many as 10-20% of speeding tickets are issued in error because the radar didn't read your speed accurately. When the officer measures your speed from a moving police car, then the error rate jumps to as high as 30%.

While analyzing radar data during severe weather, most features, such as tornadoes, have to be inferred. In other words, the radar does not have the capability to specifically show a tornado on the ground. It is impossible. TBSSs are the only direct indictator of anything seen on the radar.
